The Latest Diabetes Treatments: Highlights From the 2013 Scientific Sessions.

Last week, 17,000 diabetes doctors and other professionals gathered at the American Diabetes Association’s 73rd Scientific Sessions. This is where the greatest minds in diabetes come to share research and debate the best path forward. Today, we are sharing highlights from the conference.

One of the most exciting presentations was the 30th Anniversary Symposium for DCCT/EDIC, the largest long-term study of people with diabetes. The program has continued to find that early efforts at intensive blood sugar management continue to lower the long-term risk of complications decades later. They reported that those interventions have reduced the risk of eye disease by 50%, heart disease and stroke by 60% and kidney disease by 61%. Even a five-year period of better A1cs means lower complications decades later.
